October 4-H Newsletter




     On the next few pages you will find information regarding our upcoming club meetings, activities, & events. You are welcome to contact the Giles County Extension Office to sign up for any of these activities. We would also be happy to answer any questions!
Upcoming 4-H Club Meetings:
  • NEW DAY/TIME: Teen Leadership Club- Monday, Oct. 6th @ 6:30pm. This month club members will be electing 2015 Club Officers! Final preparations for National 4-H Week Activities as well! All Giles County teens are welcome and encouraged to join this club! Postcard reminders have been sent to those who have been invited to join the club- check your mail.
  • Newport Lucky Clovers 4-H Club- Friday, Oct 17th at 7pm held at the Newport-Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. This is our project book selection night, as well as learning more about club officers! The 2015 club calendar of events will be distributed.
  • Horsin Around 4-H Club- Monday, Oct. 20th at 6:30pm held at Harmony Hills Equestrian Center. Please contact Reanna at (540) 357-0800 for more information on this club and club meeting. They love new horse lover members!
  • Rich Creek 4-H Club- Monday, Oct. 27th at 6:30pm. This growing club meets at the Rich Creek Library. All youth ages 5-19 are welcome to join. In October the group will elect new 2015 officers & select project books for the upcoming year.

  • NATIONAL 4-H WEEK IS OCT 5-11, 2014! See event details below. Celebrate being a part of this positive youth development organization!


  • 4-H Achievement Night- Wednesday, Oct. 8th @ 6:30pm @ the Pearisburg Community Center. How Sweet It Is to be in Giles County 4-H is our theme. We hope to see EVERYONE out!


  • Parking Lot Party- Friday, Oct. 10th 6-8pm @ the Pearisburg Tractor Supply Company Store. Come here a free concert, socialize with friends and neighbors, and win some 4-H swag! 
  • October 21-23 Cake Decorating Workshop- Held each night from 6-7pm at the Giles Senior Center (beside the Pearisburg Town Pool). Class participation is free but pre-registration is required and there is a limited number of spots.
 
  • Saturday, October 25- Narrows Fall Festival at the Community Center to be held from 5-8pm. Join 4-H and other organizations to celebrate the fall season! Pumpkins to decorate, costume contests and other family friendly activities will be a delight for the whole family!

Other Camp Opportunities:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED- Friday, Oct. 10th at our Parking Lot Party. Volunteers are needed to help setup & pass out prizes. Please contact Cora if you are able to help!
Wear your camp t-shirts, share your 4-H story, and explore new 4-H opportunities for National 4-H Week 2015!

All 4-H Club Meetings & 4-H Events are open to all youth and their families! You are welcome to contact the Giles County Extension Office for more information or to suggest program ideas.

Giles County 4-H Upcoming Events


Have you seen this upcoming event from Giles County 4-H? 

Register by calling the Giles County Extension Office at 540-921-3455. Please register by September 19.
Who: Open to youth 9+ and their families
Where: Pembroke Ruritan Building (at Pembroke Park)
When: 3 Workshops all beginning at 6pm (Each workshop will last approximately 1 hour)
*   Tuesday, September 23- Get the backstory & build a launch system
*   Wednesday, September 24- Brainstorm & design rockets
*   Thursday, September 25- Launch rockets & test designs!
This program is designed by the Arizona Cooperative Extension Service for the 2014 National Youth Science Day. Interested volunteers should contact the Extension Office. This is a free program open to all Giles County residents.
If you are a person with a disability and desire assistive devices, services, or other accommodations to participate in this activity, please contact the Virginia Cooperative Extension-Giles at 540-921-3455 during the business hours of 8 am to 5 pm, M-Th by September 9, 2014.

Upcoming 4-H Club Meetings:
Teen Leadership Club- Wednesday, September 10th at 7pm. This month club members will be completing the year-in-review scrapbook and making plans for National 4-H Week & the winter outing! All Giles County teens are welcome and encouraged to join this club! Postcard reminders have been sent to those who have been invited to join the club- check your mail.

Horsin Around 4-H Club- Monday, September 15th at 6:30pm held at Harmony Hills Equestrian Center. Please contact Reanna at (540) 357-0800 for more information on this club and club meeting. They love new horse lover members!
Newport Lucky Clovers 4-H Club- Friday, September 26th at 7pm held at the Newport-Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. This is our Recognition Club Gathering! Youth will share their project books awards and recognition will be given and the 2015 club calendar of events will be distributed. Great new things are happening with the Newport 4-H Club and you should join us!
 Rich Creek 4-H Club- Monday, September 29th at 6:30pm. This growing club meets at the Rich Creek Library. All youth ages 5-19 are welcome to join. In September our group will complete the Dramatic Reading Showcase and discuss an upcoming community service project. Games and fun always included! Club leaders/parents are planning to meet at 6pm to discuss the upcoming 4-H year and activities for the club.

Friday, September 12th ChildFest in Pearisburg at the Town Park.
September 23-25 ROCKETS TO THE RESCUE- Held each night from 6-7pm at the Pembroke Ruritan Building at the Pembroke Town Park. No fee to participate, but youth must pre-register by contacting the Giles CountyExtension Office. Youth ages 9+ and parents are welcome to attend!
September 30th EEMS Rockets & Robots After-School 4-H- Beginning on Tuesday, September 30th at Eastern. This program will be open to youth in grades 4-7th. Meeting dates are being finalized- please contact the Extension Office if you would like to get on the list for more information.
NATIONAL 4-H WEEK IS OCTOBER 5-11, 2014! Events to include a county-wide Achievement Night, roadside billboards, t-shirts, and prizes- Celebrate being a part of this positive youth development organization!
October 13-17 Hokie Showcase Week. 4th grade teachers- You should have received from me, information about the Jr. Hokie Showcase to be held on the campus of Virginia Tech. Please let me know if you are interested in this free field trip for your students.

August Newsletter 2014

Upcoming 4-H Club Meetings:
Teen Leadership Club- Wednesday, August 13th. This is our rescheduled campfire meeting! Please meet at the Extension Office parking lot at 6:30pm. We will carpool/take the 4-H van to our campfire location. All Giles County teens are welcome and encouraged to join this club! Special invitations will be sent for those rising CIT’s who have been invited to join the club- check your mail.

September meetings:
Teen Leadership Club- Wednesday, September 10th at 7pm. Meeting at the Extension Office (507Wenonah Ave, Pearisburg) the September meeting will include Achievement Night preparation and dramatic reading showcase. All teens within Giles County are welcome to join this premier leadership club!
Newport 4-H Club- Friday, September 12th. The details are being finalized for our September Achievement Social! All club members will turn in their project books and share with community members what they have done this year in 4-H! Stay tuned or contact a club leader for more information. 
Rich Creek 4-H Club- Monday, September 29th at 6:30pm. Monthly program will include club planning for 2015 and candidates for club officers.

Upcoming 4-H Events (open to everyone!):
Friday, August 8th at 4:30pm. NewportAgriculture Fair Livestock Show and potluck dinner. Enjoy all the fair festivities in Newport and watch the youth livestock show. You are welcome to bring a dish to share in our potluck dinner tradition following the show. The fair offers a nice family outing!
Sunday, August 10th at 7am. Fairground cleanup! The Newport Agriculture Fair supports 4-H programs and clubs and we support the fair by helping to cleanup the grounds on Sunday morning. The more volunteers that come out the quicker we get done! See you there!
Friday, August 15th from 5-?. Bring the whole family out to the Narrows Homemade and Homegrown Famers Market to enjoy local vendors. You are welcome to set up for free on third Friday nights as well. Contact the Narrows Town Hall for more information. Stay after the market closes for a FREE FAMILY FRIENDLY MOVIE under the stars. This month we are showing Babe!
Saturday, August 16th from 11am-3pm. The United Fund of Giles County is hosting their second annual KidsFest & Yellow Rubber Duck Race at the Narrows Town Park. Games, contests, family activities, and of course the DUCK RACE. This is a great family-friendly event to attend. The United Fund of Giles County is a huge supporter of scholarships for Giles County 4-H campers- show you appreciate their support and attend this fun event!
Thursday, August 21st at 5:30pm. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED- The Giles County Farm Bureau Membership Annual Meeting is happening at Giles High School and we need servers! Please contact Cora to sign up to volunteer to help serve this meal. The Farm Bureau supports 4-H programs throughout the year and this is one way we give back to our community.

Special Request:
The last 4-H Day Camp of the summer is happening August 18-22. If you are a teen counselor or adult who would like to volunteer to help with our final Outdoor Adventure Day Camp, please contact Cora. We are need of help each day of the week between 8:30am and 3:30pm. A few hours or a few days would be greatly appreciated!

Happenings:
  • The Day Camping Series has hosted over 63 youth this summer. Traveling all around Giles County, these participants learned about independence, teamwork, trees, outdoor safety, natural resources, and made new friends!
  • During the Spring 2014 the Clover Campaign in partnership with the Pearisburg Tractor Supply Company raised well over $600 for 4-H programs in the county. The Fall Paper Clover campaign is October 8th-19th.

Important: All livestock must be haltered and broke to lead

Rules for Livestock Show:                                            
1.     Livestock must be on the fairgrounds by 2pm on Friday.                             
2.     Livestock show will begin at 4:30pm on Friday and will follow the class order listed in this book.                               
3.     Exhibitors will be responsible for their animals including care, feed, water, and showing.                               
4.     Classes with large numbers will be subdivided at the discretion of Show Management.                                  
5.     All cattle must be haltered and broke to lead.                                  
6.     Livestock must be removed by 2pm Saturday unless special permission by the livestock superintendent is received.                   
7.     The judge's decision is final.                                   
8.     Exhibitors must be members of the Giles or surround counties to Giles in VA & WV 4-H Club or FFA and must meet all age requirements.                           
9.     Animals do not have to be registered or purebred.

Hello, Patrick County will be holding its 1st livestock show during the Patrick County Agricultural Fair during the week of September 16-20 located at Stuart Rotary Field on Woodland Drive. Our livestock show will focus on the categories of T-Shirt Design, Commercial Junior Ewe Show, Junior Market Lamb Show, Junior Market Goat Individual, Commercial Junior Breeding Meat Goat Show, Sheep and Goat Costume Contest, and Junior Stockman’s Contest. Upcoming 4-H Events:
  • Monday, June 2nd at 6:30pm- Narrows Now 4-H Club Meeting. Dairy Month Activities! Join us at the Narrows Community Center (old NHS) for our club meeting. New comers are encouraged!!
  • Wednesday, June 4th- 2014 Dairy Month Poster Contest! CLICK HERE to find information about the June Dairy Month Contest. Please take a moment to look over the information and encourage a child you know to submit a poster for judging and prizes! All rules and specifications are included in the link. You are welcome to contact the Giles County Extension Office if you have any questions. Posters must be in the Giles County Extension Office by Wednesday, June 4th for county judging. We will review and display all posters. County judging will happen on Friday, June 6th. County winners posters will be taken for state judging on Monday, June 16th! We will then display all posters through June and participants are welcome to pick up their poster by July 3rd.

    • Monday, June 9th at 6pm- Pre-Camp Meeting for all 4-H Overnight Summer Camp Participants and their families. This meeting will be held at the Pearisburg Community Center (KJ) Auditorium. At this meeting, transportation, camp packing lists, camper classes, and rooms will be given. This is also your opportunity to meet Teen Counselors and Adult Volunteers who will be going to camp. No need to RSVP- just show up.
    • Thursday, June 12th at 6pm- Pumpkin Planting Community Event at the Giles County Land Lab (parking at soccer practice fields of GHS). Come plant with us in the pumpkin patch! Free seeds will be given for participants to take home.
    • Friday, June 20th Farm Bureau Membership Appreciation Day. In partnership with the Giles County Farm Bureau Membership Appreciation Luncheon, members of the Giles County Extension Leadership Council will share with the public the story of Virginia Cooperative Extension. It will take place from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Lunch will consist of hotdogs, chips, etc. 4-H and FFA members will also be participating. Visitors can learn more about VCE-Giles County, Giles County Farm Bureau, Giles County 4-H, and the FFA program in Giles County. There will be giveaways and a raffle!
    • Friday, June 20th from 5-8pm- Homemade & Homegrown at the Narrows Farmers Market. ‘Movies at the Market’ starts around 8:30. This is a free family-friendly movie; bring a blanket, & the family! June movie will be: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
    • Saturday, June 21st Pearisburg Festival in the Park. This annual event just got better! Giles County Agents & ELC members will be hosting talks through the morning at their booth. Visitors can also see the centennial display and learn about upcoming Giles County Extension programs. Also on the grounds will be live music, food, children’s rides, youth and family activities, 4-H demonstrations, vendors, friends, and neighbors! This community event is sponsored by the Pearisburg Festival in the Park Committee and the Town of Pearisburg.
